Beyond Marketing: How Client Communication Builds Engagement and Improves Practice Flow
I had a great time speaking with John Grant on the Agile Attorney Podcast about communication throughout the legal client lifecycle.
“Take blog posts as an example. When [people are] thinking about hiring a lawyer, one of the first things people think is, I'm not going to understand what they're talking about. Or, I'm going to be in this impersonal system.
And so the way you write your blog posts—have you written it in a way that is accessible to the reader without being condescending? Or have you written it totally over their head, with a bunch of verbs and with long sentences?
If you are thoughtfully writing to your audience, you are already communicating, “I care enough to figure out who you might be and what you might need from me.” And people pick up on that.
You can do it explicitly; you can write about what it's like to work with you. But you also do it implicitly. . . . With your blog posts or your web copy, you're giving them a sense of what it will be like to work with you and whether they'll feel welcome.”
You can listen to the podcast wherever fine podcasts are hosted.
John and I will also be co-hosting a workshop about client communication, “Better Client Relationships, Fewer Interruptions,” on Friday, December 12. I hope you’ll join us. Register here!
